[16:1]  1 sn Psalm 16. The psalmist seeks divine protection because he has remained loyal to God. He praises God for his rich blessings, and is confident God will vindicate him and deliver him from death.

[16:1]  2 tn The precise meaning of the Hebrew term מִכְתָּם (mikhtam) is uncertain. HALOT 582-83 s.v. defines it as “inscription.”

[16:1]  3 tn The Hebrew perfect verbal form probably refers here to a completed action with continuing results (see 7:1; 11:1).

[16:1]  sn Taken shelter. “Taking shelter” in the Lord is an idiom for seeking his protection. Seeking his protection presupposes and even demonstrates the subject’s loyalty to the Lord. In the psalms those who “take shelter” in the Lord are contrasted with the wicked and equated with those who love, fear and serve the Lord (Pss 5:11-12; 31:17-20; 34:21-22).

[44:3]  4 tn Or “take possession of.”

[44:3]  5 tn Heb “and their arm did not save them.” The “arm” here symbolizes military strength.

[44:3]  6 tn Heb “your right hand.” The Lord’s “right hand” here symbolizes his power to protect and deliver (see Pss 17:7; 20:6; 21:8).

[44:3]  7 tn Heb “your arm.”

[44:3]  8 tn Heb “light of your face.” The idiom “light of your face” probably refers to a smile (see Eccl 8:1), which in turn suggests favor and blessing (see Num 6:25; Pss 4:6; 31:16; 67:1; 80:3, 7, 19; 89:15; Dan 9:17).

[44:3]  9 tn Or “favorable toward.”

[71:1]  10 sn Psalm 71. The psalmist prays for divine intervention and expresses his confidence that God will protect and vindicate him. The first three verses are very similar to Ps 31:1-3a.

[119:5]  11 tn Heb “if only my ways were established.”

[119:12]  12 tn Heb “[are] blessed.”

[119:14]  13 tn Heb “in the way of your rules.”

[119:14]  14 tn Heb “as upon,” meaning “as if” (see 2 Chr 32:19).

[119:14]  15 tn Heb “all wealth.” The phrase refers to all kinds of wealth and riches. See Prov 1:13; 6:31; 24:4; Ezek 27:12, 18.

[119:112]  16 tn Heb “I turn my heart to do.”

[119:123]  17 tn Heb “my eyes fail for your deliverance.” The psalmist has intently kept his eyes open, looking for God to intervene, but now his eyes are watery and bloodshot, impairing his vision. See the similar phrase in v. 82.

[119:123]  18 tn Heb “and for the word of your faithfulness.”

[119:143]  19 tn Heb “find.”

[132:13]  20 tn Or “for.”

[132:13]  21 tn Heb “he desired it for his dwelling place.”

[145:2]  22 tn Or, hyperbolically, “forever.”

[145:16]  23 tn Heb “[with what they] desire.”
